Frequently asked questions

Sailing

How old do you have to be to go sailing?

For Keelboat Sailing normally a minimum of 11 years of age, with parents or guardians permission. For Cruising, the minimum age limit is 18. There is no upper age limit, we have sailors in their 90's. Please contact us for further details

How do I become a volunteer?

Simply call us on 0333 088 3278 or send us an email - see the contacts page and go to the enquiry form.

How much does it cost?

All sailors and volunteers must be members of EAST, for which there is an annual charge of £30 (£5 for juniors). Keelboat sailing sessions are free for volunteers and £10 per session for sailors (our guests). There is no charge for carers. For longer Visually Impared Cruises please see the CRUISING section.

What skills do I need to be a volunteer?

Sailing skills are important if you want to crew or skipper a boat but EAST is an RYA Training Centre so you can learn and develop all the skills you require through EAST's in-house & RYA regognised courses. Everyone who works at EAST is a volunteer and we always need help with sailing, admin, fundraising, maintenance and galley work. The main things that EAST are looking for is a positive, friendly attitude, reliability and regular commitment.
