Orwell Walk raises funds for EAST

25/06/2012
On Sunday, 24 June Lynette Chapman set out to complete the Orwell Charity Walk and raise funds for EAST. She did an absolutely splendid job and raised a total of £2076.00. The following is an account from Lynette of her experience.

'My sincere thanks to everyone who so generously sponsored me for the above event - it was lovely to have such incentive to achieve my best.

My ‘training ground’ was what I call ‘The Grundisburgh Walk’ – a 2.4 circular walk from home. My best was just over 19 miles, and to do 8 x 2.4 laps of the same circuit is mentally either excruciatingly tedious or cathartic – depending on weather and mood; the only way I could keep an accurate tally on whether I was on round 5 or 6 or could it even be 7 - please, was to attach a length of string to my trousers and, to celebrate the completion of every lap, I added a knot!

Sunday 24 June began for me at 5:30am, with the rain pelting down, and a serious temptation to take a ‘sicky’ and return to the horizontal! During the day the weather was not particularly kind with Force 5 winds, rain nearing hail, clouds and sun. The conditions were also testing with lots of sticky mud and puddles – not a pretty sight on return. However, by far and away the best was the support and companionship of a seasoned Orwell Walk walker, so our 8 hours - including a stop for lunch and 10 registration stations supplying drinks and encouragement – ended at 3:30pm back at the Gainsborough Sports Centre.

The Walk and its ‘consequences’ are now well behind! I enjoyed the challenge and surprised myself on the day as well. Never having attempted its like before, I had no idea of the power of adrenalin, not to mention good company. Maybe, I shall look forward to a future attempt with a picnic hamper, bottle of wine and soft rug!'

Our sincere thanks go to Lynette for this great effort and for choosing EAST as her charity
