For Sailors with Disabilities

Our Keelboat programme welcomes disabled sailors over the age of 10 years.

The EAST Waterside Community Centre has been designed with you in mind and is fully accessible and very user friendly. At the centre we have the equipment and necessary assistance to aid wheelchair users to access the pontoons, where we also have our purpose built hoist to help sailors into the boats if required.

After sailing sessions, refreshments are available at the EAST Waterside Community Centre, where there are fully accessible washroom facilities.

EAST'S Cruising Programme
These activities are designed for people who are blind or visually impaired to live on board a yacht with the owner as skipper.

EAST are always looking for new volunteers

What EAST can offer you

AS an RYA training centre, EAST can offer formal training and excellent Keelboat sailing on The River Orwell. EAST has no paid employees but has a friendly team of like-minded volunteers who enjoy sailing and working with people with a range of abilities. EAST can offer you the opportunity of helping others and doing something worthwhile.

Essential qualities of an EAST volunteer

You must be friendly, willing and reliable and hopefully have a sense of humour. Some sailing experience is useful but a positive, willing attitude is more important. We have an interview/ induction process and all volunteers must be DBS checked and must keep up to date with First Aid and Disability Awareness Training.

EAST has no paid staff and relies totally on its volunteers.
We have been successful in attracting new sailors and now require additional volunteers to help them enjoy a sailing experience.
Could you help with any of these tasks:
• Sailing Crew We have a fleet of Squibs, Sonars, Yeomans and 2 Ribs
• Session Administration To greet our sailors, log them into our computer system, and assist with fitting lifejackets
• Galley Staff To assist with teas, coffees and light refreshments
• Maintenance Staff To assist with repair and maintenance of our fleet
• Fund Raising We rely on the generosity of our donors
• Yacht Skippers and crew for our Visually Impaired sailor cruises
Full training, where required, will be given.
If you wish to speak to a member of our team please call into our Waterside Community Centre or telephone 0333 088 3278
